What is Northeastern University Acceptance Rate?

Northeastern University Acceptance Rate
Chart Showing Northeastern University Acceptance Rate

Northeastern University is one of the most difficult schools to get into in Europe. It has a very competitive admission process and requirements. This means you need to indeed meet up with the standard before you can get admitted into the school. The current acceptance rate at Northeastern is 18.38 %. Mathematically, out of every 100 applicants to the school, only just about 18 students are admitted.

Northeastern University’s admission process is a very rigorous selection process. You just have to meet up with all their admission requirements like a good GPA, SAT/ACT as well a good application essay to stand any chance of gaining a spot on the 2026 admission list.

The school admittance rate has continued to never be stable over the past few years and certainly would not be anytime soon as acceptance rates are determined based on many factors like the number of received applications, number of qualified applications, etc.

In 2017, out of 62,263 applicants, 11,240 students were accepted for enrollment, representing an 18.1% acceptance rate, in 2018, Northeastern has an acceptance rate of 18%, in 2019, the acceptance rate improved from about 2% to 20% and in 2020, it got even better by about 0.5% moving Northeastern university’s acceptance rate to 20.5% for the 2020 class. To date, the acceptance rate has been averagely at 20%.

This shows that for every 100 applicants to Northeastern University, about 20 candidates get admitted. This is still very much less competitive, unlike Northwestern University with an average acceptance rate of 19.3% in the current report.

Additionally, according to the 2017 Northeastern University information gotten from the admission board, a total number of 62,272 applications were received but just 12,042 were eventually admitted at Northeastern, this means about 19.34% acceptance rate which is considerably better than the previous year with about 1.24%.

The institution is well known for its global innovative teaching method and global links that extend as far as the Boston campus.

If you want to boost your chance of gaining admission into Northeastern despite the low admittance rate, then you must meet up with their GPA requirement as well as the SAT/ACT score. This is very compulsory as it contributes a whole lot to the overall application score.

This is one of the first things you need to ensure you fulfill to qualify for the second round of Northeastern applications. If you fail to meet up to their test expectation, it will surely dent your hope of passing the first round of the application.

After you must have been successfully picked for the second round of the selection phase with the GPA, ACT, or SAT score presented, other additional documents will as well give you more edge over others going forward in your screening process. Most times, the document presented isn’t a total guarantee that you will be offered admission, but the admission committee sometimes wants you to convince them with your writing. This is why you should ensure to also write a good essay (personal statement), recommendation letter as well as have good extracurricular activities and some other requirements needed of you which we are going to talk about in the article.

What is Northeastern University Admission Requirement?

When applying to any university or college, there are many things that you have to put into consideration, most of these things are important as they have a great effect on your admission. However, some of them are even much more important than others. There are the things that the admission committee often looks out for in each application submitted. They tend to determine your faith as an applicant, especially in a school like Northeastern University.

Here are the things:

  • GPA requirement
  • Test requirement- Most times [ SAT and ACT (Not compulsory),
  • Application requirement.
  • English proficiency [ C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge English), Duolingo English Test (DET), IELTS, PTE Academics, TOEFL]
  • Secondary School Report (SSR)
  • High school transcript
  • Semester Credit (transfer student)
  • Two-letter of recommendation

This post will be talking basically about Northeastern GPA requirements, SAT/ACT score requirements, and some other important application requirements that will guarantee your eventual admission into Northeastern University, NEU.

First-Year Application Eligibility

  • Applicants must have concluded their secondary education and wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree as a full-time university student.
  • You should have been in a secondary school and can apply during or after your final year.
  • Must not have been admitted/matriculated to another degree-granting institution, otherwise, you must apply to MIT as a transfer student.
  • Must not have gotten a bachelor’s degree from another institution
  • Transfer students must have finished high school or have completed at least one year of a college education.

Northeastern Application fee or waiver

As a first-year student applying to Northeastern University, you will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $75 application fee. However, there is an option to pay it yourself while you can as well apply for a fee waiver – this means that the school will offer you the chance to apply for your program with the application fee on them.

Most schools give the fee waiver to only their first-year applicants. But Northeastern University has made this available also to the graduate school of Engineering.

The Northeastern graduate school of engineering is celebrating National Engineering week and anytime they do this, you can apply to any of the Graduate school of Engineering’s 45 plus Ph.D., and graduate certificates via an application fee waiver. You can apply here https://coe.northeastern.edu/apply/ with the waiver code “EWeekApplyNU2021″

Kindly note that the code above is for 2021- The 2022 School of engineering Week waiver fee application code has not been released. But we will surely notify you as soon as it is released on the school website. Kindly ensure to subscribe to receive notification from this post/blog to get notified of the update.

Northeastern University GPA requirement

The average GPA requirement to stand a chance of gaining admission to Northeastern University is 4.04. From all statistics, you can deduce that admission into Northeastern will be a little bit hard, seeing that the acceptance rate is way below average. But if you have a good GPA score higher than 4.04, you can shoot up your chance of admission. Anything lower than the 4.04 GPA might place you in a risky zone.

Whichever side you are, you should also note that having a GPA of 4.04 or even above is NOT a guarantee that you will be accepted into Northeastern University, NU. Many other factors have to be in place. These are what the admission committee looks at to determine the overall performance of your application.

So yes, even if you did not meet up with the required Northeastern GPA score of 4.04, other factors can make up for it and get you your admission. These factors will be discussed below. But if you have a GPA score greater than 4.04, I can assure you that you are one leg into Northeastern University to study your dream program.

Although NEU does not officially report the exact GPA required you to have, most schools will of course only specify a minimum GPA requirement. We have studied statistics from over 1000 schools, and I can assure you that most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0 while some use an unweighted GPA. You can read more on what a weighted and unweight GPA means.

With a GPA of 4.04, Northeastern expects that you will be one of the best in your class. For you to have 4.04, it shows that you have straight A’s in your college results which will of course push you to compete with other applicants.

To further prove your good academic background, you can take harder classes like the AP or IB classes. If as a junior or senior student, you have a GPA lower than 4.04, you will need a higher SAT or ACT score to complement your score. This is what will make you fit to stand out despite the competition.

What is Northeastern University Required SAT and ACT Test Score?

Important:

  • Kindly note that Standardized test is made optional for the 2022/2023 academic year. So if you are a US citizen, a first-year applicant, an international applicant, or a transfer applicant, Northeastern University does not take standardized tests compulsory for the 2022/2023 academic year and is not required for applicants to be considered for NEU admission.
  • You will not be penalized if you choose not to submit a standardized test
  • The accepted standardized testing is SAT or ACT or both
  • Northeastern University uses super-scores and only your best score between the submitted tests will be considered
  • Nonnative English speakers will be required to submit an official; result from an approved English language test.

However, even though Northeastern University has made standardized testing optional for the 2022/2023 academic session. It has before now been a significant requirement you need to have while submitting your application to the school.

Northeastern requires that you either take SAT or ACT or even both. Since they use a super-score, the best result will be considered.

Over the years, we have gathered a reasonable number of statistics on students admitted into the school and how they have performed in these two standardized tests relative to their admission percentage. You see more of this in a table as your read further in the post.

There is however no maximum number of the test result you can submit. But you can submit at least 6 tests while applying to Northeastern of any college – ^ test the industry consensus.

Northeastern SAT Requirement

There is a chunk of different content from the different websites giving their different view on the average required SAT score at the Northeastern, but the truth is that Northeastern does not specify the exact SAT score an applicant must have to be considered for admission except for their recommended score of 100 in TOEFL, 7.5 in IELTS, 70 in Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academics, 190 in Cambridge English Qualifications (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) and 125 in Duolingo English Test (DET).

The average SAT score composite at Northeastern University is 1475 on the 1600 SAT scale.

The 25th percentile new SAT score is 1,410 while the 75th percentile SAT score is 1,540.

This of course makes Northeastern strongly competitive. But since it is not a compulsory test you should submit, you have no reason to worry. If you are unsure about your test score, or you did not meet up with the average Northeastern SAT score, you should not bother submitting, it since it is not compulsory for the 2022/2023 academic year.

A score of 1,410 will place you below the average SAT score of 1,475 while a score of 1,540 will place you above the average score. As I have earlier established, Northeastern does not need you to submit your standardized testing result. But if you feel that you have a good score to present, then you can submit it alongside your applications.

It is worth noting from the table below that 50% of the accepted students had scores within this range.

Breakdown of Northeastern University Admission Rate from 2020 to 2022

Northeastern universities are indeed having a surge in the rate of application this year. It has the highest number of university applications as far as 2022 is concerned. After Northeastern university is Boston College and Boston University with about 41,000 applications and 81,000 applications respectively so far this year

Northeastern have so far received about 91,000 applications in 2022 this, by comparison, is almost 50% up from the applications received two years ago.

Northeastern University 2020 received about 64,428 applications in total and in 2021 received 75,000 in total.

The reason behind this rise in applications to Northeastern university have be subjected to many criticisms by different analysts and comments and some have said that they are not that reliable this year, attributing the rise in application number to the use of the “Common Application” A tool that can allow students to easily fill one application and send it to multiple institutions, multiple time.

Breakdown of Northeastern Acceptance Rate by Gender

FULL-TIME PART-TIME
Men Women Men Women
Undergraduates
Degree-seeking, first-time freshmen 1,777 2,727

Applicants are therefore advised to aim for the 75th percentile with an SAT score and a 4.04 GPA or higher in other to stand a higher chance of admission.

Northeastern University ACT Requirement.

Northeastern does not specify the exact ACT minimum score you can submit. But it is very certain from the with a minimum score of either  100 TOFL, 7.5 IELTS, to Pearson Test of English(PTE) Academics, 190 in Cambridge English Qualification (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) or 125 in Duolingo English Test, you can be well sure that you are on a save side.

Statistically, 50% of the total number of admitted students into the Northeastern University have an average of 34 ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 33 while the 75th percentile ACT score is 36.

It is worth noting from the table below that 50% of the accepted students had scores within this range.

This implies that a score of 33 will place you below the average score while a 36 score will move you above the average score of 34. As I have earlier stated, Northeastern did not set any required average ACT score. But it is expected that any applicant should have at least a 34+ ACT score to stand any chance of admission consideration. – Be reminded that SAT/ ACT testing is not compulsory, so you can even still get admitted without it.

Update on Northeastern University 2022 Acceptance Rate for the Class of 2026

With well over 90,989 applications that were received by Northeastern this year just about 6,179 applications were accepted this makes just about a 6.7% acceptance rate. Without a doubt, this is not even close to 50% of Northeastern acceptance rate in previous years.

Dropping from 18% for the class of 2025 to just 6.7% for the class of 2026.  Northeastern is however not the only school affected by this drop-in acceptance rate. According to College Kickstart, Boston University’s acceptance rate dropped from 18% to 14%, Wesleyan’s acceptance rate dropped from 19% to 14%, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT’s acceptance rate dropped from 7.3% to 4%

NEU’s low acceptance rate however was suggested to have been caused by the increase in the number of applications received which was increased by about 15,000 more than in previous years according to Nargi

This decrease in acceptance rate has however caused a series of positive as well as negative comments from both incoming and current students of the school

It is glaring that the Northeastern acceptance rate in 2022 for the class of 2026 matches that of the popular Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT acceptance rate for the first time.

The reason behind this spike in the number of applications and low acceptance rate can be traced down to the test-optional policy since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, Northeastern has no supplemental essay requirement on the Common Application, unlike many other universities.

As far as the 2026 Northeastern class is concerned. It is not about the competition or requirement, because, judging from the requirement and qualifications, many of the admitted applicants might not have been, but it isn’t, it is just about who reads your application – this was the comments of most people.
