What is UVA Acceptance Rate?

UVA Acceptance Rate.
Chart Showing UVA Acceptance Rate

Admission into the University of Virginia is one of the most selective with just an acceptance rate of 23% and an early acceptance rate of 20.6%.  This simply means that out of every 100 applications received by UVA, only just about 23 application gets accepted into the school. While out of every 100 applications received for the early action, just an approximate 26 applications are admitted. Out of these successful applicants that get admitted, about 50% of them submit either of the two standardized tests of between 1320 and 1510 SAT scores and 30 to 34 ACT scores.

Additionally, nearly about one-fourth of the admitted student has scored above these ranges while one-fourth of the admitted student has below these ranges. Transfer students usually have a higher acceptance rate between the 35% to 40% range. This implies that for every 100 applications received from transfer students, about 35 to 40 applicants get admitted.  Overall, the average acceptance rate of the University of Virginia ranges from 23% to 25%.

U.VA Acceptance Rate 2022 (Class of 2026)

From a summary of the post published by: https://www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2022/03/u-va-accepts-record-low-19-percent-of-50962-applicants-for-class-of-2026

The office of the Undergraduate at the University of Virginia extended its application offer to about 9,522 applicants for the class of 2026 as of March 20, 2022, accepting a record as low as 19% of the total application received. From the total of 50,962 applications received from applicants all over the world, including the early action, early decision, and the regular decision rounds of the year, UVA received a total of 32% regular decision applications, 61% early action applications, and the remaining 7% coming from the early decision application. From the previous year (2021), class of 2025, UVA extended its admission offer to about 9,898 students, which amounted to a 20.6% acceptance rate for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Out of final admitted students for the 2026 academic year, the total number of those who were admitted that indicated their race amounted to about 52% of offers were offered made for students of color – this looked to be the record highest of the school. The previous year’s acceptance rate for applicants of color was 41%. In an interview with the UVA dean of admission, Gregory Robert, he made known that he was excited to welcome all the newly admitted students from all over the world, he also recognized that for some, the process ended in disappointment while for some, it ended in celebration.

While we can’t make everybody happy with every decision, we want to make sure that when they finish this process, they feel like they are cared for,” Roberts said. “We’re excited for the admitted students, we’re eager to welcome them here. And we are also thinking about the students that we are unable to admit and sending them our best wishes too.” Gregory Roberts

From the number of those given the admission offer for the class of 2026, 6,243 students were given admission in February for the early action cycle. Also, 1,120 were accepted during December for the early decision cycle. This implies that they are all eligible for acceptance upon enrollment. The early decision application for the two-cycle ended on Nov.1 Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic had a remarkable effect on the acceptance rate of most universities and colleges for the 2026 class this also resulted in many of the universities and colleges’ admission body to start conducting virtual recruiting and test-optional policies.

Standardized test score submissions were made optional for this year’s application, just like Emerson, Barnard, Northeastern, MIT, and most other colleges and universities abroad. It was further announced by the school that the test-optional era will continue through at least the 2023 admission period. Thus, concerning this test-optional guideline, 42% of the applications received opted to not submit their standardized test score, and out of the 42%, 26% of them were offered admission.

Notably, it was received that even though standardized test scores were made optional for this year’s admission, the school had an increase in the number of students who submitted their test scores than the previous year (2021, class of 2025). We further gathered from Robert’s statement that, even though the COVID-19 was expected to have a significant impact on the admission processes, there was not a lowering down of how the applicant’s files were accessed.

However, that the only way the pandemic affected the admission was through the quality of recommendation letters from large public schools, an important part of the application document. For instance, a school counselor who has about 200+ students and all of them requires the counselor to write a recommendation letter, this looks to be away too much, and a meaningful recommendation letter cannot be written in this case.

Thus, the quality of the letter will be watered down since they don’t even know them and they cannot see them facially due to the COVID restriction. From the eventual admission statistics, UVA extended about 1,460 admission offers, which is 15% of the total to students who were the first in their family to attend the college, this was more than last year’s consideration for students in this category. For last year the school admitted 1,162 of the total applications accounting for 12.5% of the first-generation college students

Note: First generation applications are applicants who were the first to apply to the University of Virginia in their entire family.

Virginia attended a total of 962 offers to the legacy students which amount to 10% of the total applications accepted. This simply means that 10% of the admitted students for the 2026 class has one or more of their relatives already studying at the university. This was very close to last year’s statistic of about 1,005 accepted legacy students.

Note: Legacy student is students who have one or more of their relative already studying or are admitted to the University of Virginia.

In 2022, it has been recorded that 3,946 Virginians’ applications were accepted, this makes up about 41% of the total application. Out of these 3,946 applications received from the Virginians, 28% were offered admission. This same as last year. This university according to them wants to maintain and ensure that a total of about 2/3 of Virginian residents make up the school population. For the out of state, 5,576 international applications were received, this makes up about 15% of the total applications received by the school.

A decline of 2% from last year’s acceptance rate of 17% for international students. Out of the total number of the overall accepted students into the school. 44% were male, while 56% were females. This means that every applicant was ensured to state their gender. Furthermore, the college of arts and science and the school of engineering and applied science both recorded a lower acceptance rate in 2022 compared to the acceptance rate for the class of 2025.

Also, the school of education and human development as well as the school of nursing experienced an increase in the acceptance rate than the previous year. For this year (2022) the acceptance rate for the school of engineering received a total of 7,038 applications accepted about 1,969 out of them. Comparing this to last year, of about 7,207 applications, which had 2,230 successful applicants. For the school of Tech, 230 applicants were admitted, similar to last year’s acceptance rate. The school of education recorded a total of 104 successful applicants, which is 15 students more than last year’s while the school of nursing accepted 169 students, a record 29 students more than the previous year. Geographically, out of the total applications received by UVA, 13.5% were African-American, this is 4.5% more than the previous year with 9%. 19% were Asians, this was 1% more than the previous year of about 18%.  While 10% were Hispanic students, 2% more than last year’s acceptance rate of 8%. Native Americans has a total of 113 applicants admitted, and 7% were international students, while the remaining 6% of the admitted students did not state their race.

Want to know what it takes to enter UVA? Yes, this is very important for you to know. Admit many requirements that you have to fulfill to securely guarantee your admission to UVA for the class of 2026, there are just a few things you need to focus on: These three things are the only critical things that will be expected of you to gain a good spot:

  • GPA score
  • Standardized testing scores (SAT and ACT requirements, and
  • Required Application documents.

Below, I will open your eye to how you can apply with the right application document to boost your chance of gaining admission into UVA.

First off, if you want to get admitted, the first thing you have to look at is the acceptance rate, which we have discussed extensively above. Once you have made thorough research on the acceptance rate of the school and how they admitted students based on location, gender, and race, then you can proceed further to know more about the required application documents. Now, as we have rightly said above, the acceptance rate at UVA is 23%. This means that for every 100 applicants, 23 are admitted. This immediately suggests that the school is very selective. But if you can meet up with UVA’s admission requirement for GPA, SAT/ACT, and some other backup document required of you, then you have a higher chance of gaining your spot with your next application. However, if you fail to meet any of these requirements (GPA or SAT/ACT score), your chance of getting admitted is reduced, even if you rightly meet up with every other required documentation required to be tendered.

UVA GPA Requirement

Most schools have a required minimum GPA score you must have to qualify you for a place on the admission list, but this is often time the least GPA score you must have for your application not to be rejected and not necessarily a guarantee of your admission.

In the real sense, the actual GPA requirement you need for a good chance of getting admission is what matters. But if you score above it, then it only places you on a better edge over others. In this

vein, we have closely looked at the average GPA for the current UVA student.

You can read more about what the weighted and unweighted GPA scale means here by sitting here to learn more With an average GPA of 4.3, UVA expects you to be one of the best in your class. This of course means that you must have has nearly straight A’s in most of your classes that can make you compete with other applicants. Also, you are expected to be taking harder classes like AP or IB courses, this will further prove to UVA that college-level academics to you won’t be something to struggle about. Furthermore, if you are currently in a junior or senior class, your GPA score might be hard to change if you want to apply to a college or university. So, if your GPA is below the school average of 4.3, you will need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate for the low GPA score. Source: UVA Admission Page

SAT & ACT Requirement

Every school has its own unique standardized testing requirement. Most schools require you to tender your SAT or ACT score, however, many of them place more priority on the SAT rather than the ACT. Whatever the case may be on your side, when it comes to UVA admission, the standardized testing as part of the application requirement for the class of 2026 has been made optional. However, you may take either SAT or ACT and submit it along with your application to UVA. And to have a higher chance of consideration, you should perform very well in it.

UVA SAT Requirements

UVA SAT requirement Calculators

UVA SAT Competitiveness Measure

Section 25th Percentile 75th Percentile Average SAT Score
SAT Math 670 770
SAT reading 660 730
SAT Composite 1300 1500 1415

The average SAT score is not compulsory by the school but candidates who choose to submit it are more compared to those who did not or only submitted ACT. The average SAT score of students who get admitted to UVA is 1415. But note that those who are scoreless in their SAT score can as well be applied for the same case. But my statistics, 50% of applicants who submit their SAT score with their application gets admitted. The SAT scores assess a student’s ability in reading, writing, and mathematics and are made optional at the University of Virginia. However, applicants are advised to have an average of 1320 and 1510 in their SAT exam on a scale of 1600. There is no specific score you should have to be considered for admission. The average SAT score composite at UVA is 1415 on the 1600 SAT scale. The 25th percentile new SAT score is 1,300 while the 75th percentile SAT score is 1,500. This shows that UVA is very competitive and since the SAT/ACT exam is not compulsory but just recommended, you have no reason to be worried. A score of 1,300 will place you below the average SAT score of 1,500 while a score of 1,415 will place you above the average score. As I have earlier established, UVA does not need you to submit your standardized testing result. But if you feel that you have a good score to present, then you can submit it alongside your applications.

SAT Score Choice Policy

The score choice policy is known as the “Highest Section” policy. Candidates must familiarize themselves with this policy. When you talk of the “ Score Choice Policy”, this simply implies that if at all for any reason you seat for two or more SAT exams and you intend to submit both results/scores, of all the test results you send, only the one with the highest score section will be chosen. This is otherwise known as “The Superscoring Policy”. Let me cite a very good example of what I mean to you. Take for instance you had three test section scores, Say test 1, Test 2, and Test 3.

Section SAT Reading + Writing SAT Math SAT Composite
Test 1 700 400 1100
Test 2 500 600 1100
Test 3 400 750 1150
Superscore 700 750 1450

Explanation of result: Looking at the table above, it is obvious that the ay with the highest score section was on test 3 (composite score of 1150). This implies that by the SAT score choice policy, UVA will choose the highest score from all three test days. This is a very good way to increase your composite from 1100 to 1450.

Notice how the superscore was Calculated.

Test 1 under the SAT Reading and Writing section had the highest score out of all the three-test days for only SAT Reading + Writing, and hence, it is chosen as the super score. Likewise, notice that Test 3 under the SAT math section had the highest score out of all the three test days for only SAT math, and hence, it is chosen as the superscore of the three days. Now the superscore is a very important testing strategy that allows you to send any test multiple scores days with your application. However, UVA will then assist you to form your superscore, and then pick the section with the highest scores and then form your total composite for you. So if your current SAT score is below the required UVA average of 1,415, then we recommend that you consider retaking the SAT exam till you are sure that you have met the required score. To get the best out of the superscore policy, suppose you noticed that you have the least score in your  SAT + Writing on your first test day, but you have a stronger score in math, after sending the total section, you can then retake the exam with the mind of focusing more on only Sat + writing this time around. This is one of the advantages of SAT choice policy.

UVA ACT Requirements

Just like the SAT, UVA does not have a specific cut-off mark to be met for admission. But if you have a score below the required average calculated from those who have previously been admitted into the school, your application will be thrashed.

The average ACT score at UVA is 32. This score makes the University of Virginia very Competitive for ACT scores. And to stand any chance of admission, you are expected to have a score around this average. Even though it is not specified by the school, it is highly recommended.

UVA ACT requirement Calculators
UVA ACT Competitiveness Measure

ACT Requirement to Get into UVA.

Section 25th Percentile 75th Percentile Average ACT Score
ACT Math 27 32
ACT English 32 35
ACT Composite 30 33 33

UVA did not set any compulsory ACT scores for their applicants. However, applicants are advised to have a minimum ACT within the range of 30 to 34. This is a good way to increase your admission possibility. From data gathered from past applications and the number of successful students in the school, 51% of those who are admitted have an average score of 29 ACT scores. And 48% of those who are admitted into the school in total submitted only their ACT score. The 25th percentile ACT score is 30 while the 75th percentile ACT score is 34. Having an ACT of 30 will place you below the average score of 33 while having an ACT of will place you right above the required average. As said earlier, there is no compulsory ACT score to get into UVA. But it is recommended for you as an applicant to have at least a 31+ ACT score to boost your chances of admission. Of course, you are not at disadvantage against anyone who submits their standardized testing if you decide not to submit yours, but you are highly recommended to do so.

ACT Score Choice Policy

If you want to use your ACT score instead of SAT for your UVA application, then you have a very good advantage in how you send your scores, and this has a great effect on your testing strategy. Explanation: You have absolute control over your ACT score when you sent the ACT to colleges. You may decide to take 10 different ACTs or more and then submit your highest score by yourself. This is what you do not have the control over when you choose to submit SAT when you submit SAT, many schools will require you to submit all your tests ever taken. This will mean that the chance of improving your ACT score is very high. Since you can take as many tests as you wish before you forward your score to the college admission office with your application. So, if you want to aim for the school average ACT score of 32 and above, you can take about 5 ACTs as many times as you want. Then when you see that you have your desired score that you are sure is worth sending, you can then send that to the school.

ACT Superscore Policy

UVA does not superscore the ACT as most other colleges do. Don’t know what superscoring means? Superscoring simply means that the school will help you to choose the highest section score from all the test dates you submit, they will combine them into the best possible composite score. But most scores will only take your highest ACT score from a single sitting Unfortunately, we were not able to find a concrete information action about UVA ACT superscore policy. This most likely suggests that the school does not superscore their ACT. But whichever the case may be, you can choose your single best ACT score and send it to UVA since you have control over the one you can send. Hence, you should ensure to prep until you have reached the recommended average ACT target of 32.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Both the SAT and your ACT have an optional essay section. You will be required to take the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section as this is one of the rankings facto for UVA admission.

SAT Subject Test Requirements

Different universities and colleges have their separate unique subject requirement for their SAT. Typically, any very selective school will require you to submit your SAT score, although most schools in the country do not require it from their applicants. UVA has indicated to the applicants that the SAT subject tests are only recommended. This means that SAT is not required and thus you might not submit them as part of your application documents. Even though submitting the can help you to further showcase a particular strength of yours, if you decide not to, you are not at a disadvantage. For instance, if you are applying to a field in engineering, if you submit a science and math SAT subject tests score, this will surely boost your application and perhaps place give you more edge over other applicants who did not submit any standardized test. From previous admission statistics at UVA, it is typically obvious that your SAT/ACT and GPA are far more heavily weighted than your SAT subject tests. So, if you have to choose between improving your SAT/ACT score and our SAT subject test score, then it is highly recommended that you choose to improve your SAT/ACT score.
